Septum Piercing: What to Expect at the Appointment

From anatomy check to clicker selection — a clear walk-through of what a septum piercing actually feels like and how long it takes to settle.

Anatomy check first

Before any septum piercing, your piercer locates the 'sweet spot' — a small section of thin soft tissue just below the cartilage wall. Not every nose has a centered sweet spot, and a good piercer will tell you honestly.

We pierce that soft tissue only. We do not pierce the cartilage wall itself.

The piercing itself

A sterile receiving tube supports the tissue from the inside while a single-use needle passes through. Sensation is sharp for two to three seconds, and most clients report watering eyes — a normal reflex, not pain.

Initial jewelry is typically a titanium circular barbell or clicker, sized for swelling.

Healing

The fistula closes in around 6–8 weeks. Full settling, where you can comfortably change jewelry, takes 4–6 months.

During healing, do not flip the jewelry up and down repeatedly — that is the single most common cause of irritation.
